Timothy, shaken out of his usual grown-up manner, jumped up and down beside her as Dorcas grabbed the phone, and a moment later the rest of the family poured out of the house and she was surrounded.

“Daadi?” She put her hand over her free ear. “Talk loud! Everyone is so excited they’re making it hard to hear.”

Her father’s chuckle came through. “I can hear them. We’re pretty excited here, too. Twins!”

There was so much she wanted to know that it was hard to get the questions out. “They’re all right? Both of them? How much do they weigh? Boys, I hear. And Grace? How is she?”

“Wonderful,” he boomed. “Your mamm will tell you more, that’s for sure, but Grace hasn’t stopped smiling. As for Ezra—his feet haven’t touched the ground yet.”

“And the babies?” She held her breath, picturing the two tiny boys in her mind.

“Fine, fine. Over five pounds, both of them, with a good pair of lungs. Listen.” He must have held the phone out because she heard a twittering of voices and then the unmistakable sound of hungry newborns.

Dorcas breathed a prayer of thanksgiving. Then, because Matty was pulling on her apron so hard it was about to come off, she turned away from the phone long enough to relay the news.

“I want to talk to them,” Matty wailed as Sarry pulled him away, and she could hear Katie explaining.

“There, that’s better.” She pressed the phone against her ear again. “We’re all so happy for them. What—”

“Dorcas, I must tell you something else. Your mamm will stay for another week or two, but I’m coming home soon. Tell your bruder, yah?”

“I will, but—”

“I have to hang up. Ezra wants the phone. I’ll see you in a day or two.”

He hung up before Dorcas could get out another question. Frustrated, she shook the receiver as if that would help. There was so much more she wanted to know, but it was useless expecting to hear it from Daad on the phone. He only used the telephone in emergencies, and as excited as he was, he probably didn’t consider two healthy babies that. She’d have to wait for Mammi’s call to hear all the details.

She stepped out of the phone shanty and into a hail of questions, most of which she couldn’t answer. She waved her hands for quiet.

“Hush, now. Go and finish your chores, and we’ll have a good long talk about your new cousins before you go to bed.”

Several groans from the older boys greeted that, but they went off quickly enough. Timothy grabbed Matty’s hand and pulled him along, and she could hear Matty’s excited questions all the way to the barn.

Then Sarry was waiting to give her an enormous hug. “Two new babies, yah? Two!”

“Yah, we have two new nephews.” She kissed her sister’s cheek, knowing how much Sarry loved babies. “We’ll go down to Lancaster County to see them before long.”

Sarry seemed content with that for now. “I’ll make another little hat, yah?”

“Right. And we’ll do another baby quilt, too.
